What is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing or Portable Appliance Testing is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use.

This is done by testing:

  • Using testing equipment that will perform various tests to ensure your equipment is safe to use.

  • Visual inspections as some electrical safety defects can only be found by the visual inspection. It is essential to understand that visual inspection is an essential part of the process because some types of electrical safety defect can't be detected by testing alone.

Is PAT Testing a Legal Requirement?

Regulations do not specify what needs to be done, by whom or how frequently (i.e they don't make inspection or testing of electrical appliances a legal requirement, nor do they make it a legal requirement to undertake this annually).

Although not law

The Electricity at Work Regulations (reg 4(2)) requires that "as may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as reasonably practicable, such danger."

Regulation 5 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment (PUWER) Regulations states "Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair."
